Celebrating the women of JSAcreative

Today marks International Women’s Day; and while at JSA we love celebrating the achievements of all our staff members, in this blog post we wanted to put our ladies in the limelight and show off their talent, and the insight they bring on a daily basis across brand strategy, graphic design, project management, digital strategy and beyond. Here’s what each had to say.

Sharelle Beguely: Studio Manager

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received?

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.

Who’s another female that inspires you?

It was great to meet Kristin who is a female Creative Director at Flight Centre – there are not many women in that role.

What are your career goals?

I’m happy to say i’ve achieved them.

What’s your favourite piece of work that you have done while at JSA?

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received?

When applying for a role in the past, I was asked what salary I was expecting. I replied that anything would be fine and to be honest, that I’d work for nothing given the opportunity. The woman I was applying with told me that she had said things like that in the past, and that females generally do, but to know your worth and assert yourself.

Who’s another female that inspires you?

Natasha Jen from Pentagram, other than being intelligent and talented she has a wicked sense of humour.

What are your career goals?

I would like to branch out into brand-strategy.

What’s your favourite piece of work that you have done while at JSA

The Mobile Library (Brisbane City Council) was a fantastic project to work on. I had the opportunity to be involved in the photography process including location scouting and even featuring on the artwork myself. With collateral, we made pop-out models for kids to build themselves and a range of other items. It was very rewarding to see everything come together at the launch event and see the awesome technology in use.

Teagan Markey: Designer

What is your role at JSA?

I work predominantly on Brisbane City Council projects, but you can find me sitting at my desk doing concepts, creating diagrams/infographics/maps, file tagging, composing forms etc.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received?

A bit more of general life advice really. Just that you have one life, and its up to you how you use it.

Who’s another female that inspires you?

Lisa Glanz – She’s a South African graphic designer turned illustrator, who is self employed. I find her so inspiring and down to earth and I resonate with her point of view. Have a listen to her on The Honest Designers podcast on the App Store.

What are your career goals?

I’ve always loved hands on work, and recently have been dabbling in hand lettering so I’d love to incorporate that more in my career in the future.

What’s your favourite piece of work that you have done while at JSA?

I enjoyed working on the look and feel for the National Association of Women in Construction 2017 Queensland Crystal Vision Awards. Also The ‘Go Wild’ Summer Reading Program. This project was a blast to work on! Cute animal illustrations, funky typefaces, what more could you want 🙂

Miranda El-Atem: Art Director – Brand

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received?

To have confidence in your work – if you think your work is great, it probably is because as designers we naturally second guess everything we do! Be curious and learn new things.

Who’s another female that inspires you?

Jessica Walsh. Originally I was drawn to her design aesthetic. In the last couple of years her thoughts on design/business/life as well as empowering women in the creative industries has really inspired me. She broke industry conventions, becoming a partner of a top design firm as a female in her 20s, and now uses her platform to create a worldwide community of female creatives.

What are your career goals?

To be stretched creatively and work with others to create beautiful, thoughtful brands.

What’s your favourite piece of work that you have done while at JSA?

I really enjoyed working on the posters and collateral for Brisbane Youth Services, as well as the look and feel for Arches Cafe.

Fiona Ebner: Senior Digital Project Manager

What is the best piece of career advice you have received?

This is a distillation of several pieces of advice I was given.

Find your allies. Nurture those relationships and use them to:

  • Exemplify positive communications and relationships between departments (conquer that project management / client service divide!)
  • Boost the collective voice and exposure of the female workforce within your company.
  • Use them as a sounding board. Work your challenges out with their input. You’ll gain their trust and their confidence. And remember that no question is dumb!

What are your career goals?
I’m new to Brisbane and to JSA. So I’m not really in the headspace right now where I’m working towards a particular job title or level of seniority. My goals are immediate and relate to understanding the local digital market (I’ve moved about a bit and however global our industry is, local idiosyncrasies apply) and making myself indispensable to JSA and my clients. Ask me again, once I’ve achieved that:)

Favourite piece of work done while at JSA

Sorry! Too soon to say. All my projects are works in progress.

Dia Patatoukos: Strategist

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received?

Listen more than you talk and you will have an advantage over most people in the room because most people don’t listen to understand. They listen to respond. There is so much more to what people are trying to communicate when you really listen.

Who’s another female that inspires you?

I have so many heroes like Jane Fonda, Anita Roddick. Iris Apfel is a businesswoman, interior designer and now at the age of 96, she is a fashion icon. She inspires me because she has made a career out of doing what she loves and living with purpose. Looking back on her career she says, that she just kept making life choices that would allow her to do what she loved doing which led her from one opportunity to the next. Most recently, Karlie Kloss is forging new pathways in a male-dominated industry and at the same time, she is challenging what society expects from a pretty woman. Particularly a fashion model. Karlie Kloss has founded a program to encourage more females to learn how to code. Today, female programmers make up only 18% of the tech industry.

What are your career goals?

Bring human-centered design and innovation to brand and service experiences throughout Queensland. Mentor ‘Design Thinking’ to designers and strategists.

What’s your favourite piece of work that you have done while at JSA?

It would have to be the brand strategy for the Mater, a Queensland icon. Most of Brisbane was born in this hospital. Now the Mater is leading the way in Australia in health, education, and research. Queensland has an Australian leader in health on our doorstep and we are proud to support Mater with this business innovation project.
